Discover Lofou at Nature's Pace
Surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards and the distinctive landscape of rural Cyprus, Lofou is made for exploring slowly.
At around 780 metres above sea level, the village sits high in the Limassol countryside, where winding stone lanes gradually give way to open landscapes, cultivated land and quiet trails. The surrounding environment is traditionally associated with grapevines and almond trees, while the elevation offers a refreshing contrast to the coast below.
You don’t need an ambitious itinerary to enjoy the outdoors here. Sometimes the best experience begins simply by stepping outside and walking.
One of the loveliest short walks begins just beyond the northern edge of Lofou, in the direction of Sylikou. The trail follows a downhill route of approximately one kilometre, gradually leaving the village behind and leading towards the historic Faucet of Elitzi.
Along the way, the landscape changes subtly. During the wetter winter months, a seasonal stream runs nearby, helping create a small local ecosystem of shrubs, oak trees, herbs and other characteristic vegetation.
It’s not a walk that needs to be rushed. Take your time, listen to the countryside and enjoy a quieter side of Lofou.
Where Nature Meets History
Vrysi tis Elitzis (Faucet of Elitzi)
At the end of the trail lies one of Lofou’s most meaningful rural landmarks.
The Vrysi tis Elitzis (Faucet of Elitzi) dates to 1842 and once played an important role in everyday village life, providing a place where generations of residents came to collect water. Official Cyprus tourism information continues to recognise Vrysi tis Elitzis among Lofou’s notable sights.
The original Oinoessa records add that the water source lies at the foot of a steep mountainside and that the fountain continued serving the village’s water needs until 1953.
That makes the walk particularly special: what begins as a peaceful nature trail ends at a place intimately connected with how people once lived in Lofou.
Wander Without a Route
Walking Through Lofou
Not every walk needs a marked trail.
Some of the most enjoyable walking begins within Lofou Village itself, following its winding cobbled lanes between traditional stone buildings before continuing towards the quieter edges of the settlement. The village’s old architecture and numerous winding streets are among the characteristics highlighted by Cyprus’s official tourism authority.
Early morning and late afternoon are particularly beautiful times to explore. The changing light across the stone, hills and valleys has long been part of Lofou’s appeal to photographers, artists and visitors seeking nothing more complicated than a peaceful walk.
Leave some room in your day to wander without a destination.
Beyond the Footpaths
Explore the Countryside on Two Wheels
For those who prefer two wheels, Lofou can also be a starting point for exploring the wider Limassol countryside.
A current 39.7 km intermediate e-mountain-bike route published by Limassol Tourism starts in Lofou and loops through Agios Therapon, Agios Amvrosios and Kivides before returning to the village. With approximately 920 metres of ascent, it’s a considerably more energetic way to experience the surrounding wine-country landscape.
For gentler adventures, simply walking the village outskirts and surrounding countryside offers more than enough opportunity to reconnect with the landscape.
Part of the beauty of exploring Lofou is knowing that Oinoessa is never far away. Wander the trails, breathe in the countryside and let the day unfold without a schedule.
Then, when the light begins to soften, make your way back through the village lanes to the stone-built comfort of Oinoessa. Slow days, beautiful landscapes and nowhere else you need to be.
