The Name
Inspired by Lofou's Winemaking Heritage
Wine has long been woven into the history and culture of Lofou. For generations, local families cultivated grapes and produced their own wine and zivania, continuing traditions deeply connected to Cyprus and its mountain villages.
Our grandparents were part of that tradition. Their home contained the equipment and spaces needed to make wine for the family and for distribution to nearby communities.
It is from this history that the name Oinoessa was born, inspired by the Greek words οίνος, meaning wine, and έσσω, meaning home.
The name connects Oinoessa to its origins: a family home, a wine-producing village and a tradition that has passed from one generation to the next.
The Transformation
Preserving Traditional Cypriot Architecture
The historic buildings that form Oinoessa have been passed down through generations of our family and lovingly restored with the help of skilled local artisans.
Rather than erase their age, the restoration sought to preserve it.
Original stone walls, floors, timber ceilings, staircases and architectural details were carefully retained or restored using traditional materials, including local stone and wood. Modern comforts were then incorporated sympathetically, allowing each guesthouse to retain its individual character while providing everything expected from a contemporary boutique stay.
The result is accommodation that still feels unmistakably part of Lofou village, not a recreation of traditional Cyprus, but a living part of it.

With little traffic through the old village streets, Lofou invites you to explore on foot. Wander between stone houses, discover scenic viewpoints and experience the quiet pace that has made Cyprus’s traditional mountain villages such special places to visit.
The village has its own rich cultural and religious heritage. Visitors can discover the traditional olive mill, explore local history, visit the church of Panagia Chrysolofitissa and the chapel of Profitis Elias, or follow the Lofou Nature Trail into the surrounding landscape.
Lofou’s historic primary school is another distinctive part of the village’s architectural heritage, while families will find a children’s playground nearby.
